The Friends of Jockey’s Ridge have launched a campaign to obtain a NCDMV specialty license plate showcasing Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Proceeds from the specialty tag will be used to support programs to promote, preserve and protect Jockey’s Ridge.
The new Friends of Jockey’s Ridge license plate designed by BN Design & Advertising in Kill Devil Hills, NC will feature a stunning dune and sunset image by long time Outer Banks and nature photographer, Ray Matthews, and the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge logo.
We need your support! We are asking supporters to fill out an online application and remit payment to us by December 31, 2023.
We need 500 paid applicants to move this project forward. Join us and be among the first in the state to get your plate!
- Choose between a standard or personalized specialty plate, and make your payment online with the form below.
- Once your payment is received, we will email you the DMV application through DocuSign. Please have your license and vehicle registration available to complete the application. Please complete one application for each vehicle.
Standard Specialty Plate
- This plate will have a NCDMV-determined two-letter designation as either a prefix or a suffix and, in addition, four numbers randomly assigned by the DMV.
- The annual cost for this plate is $30. A portion of your annual fee ($20) will support the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge.
Personalized Specialty Plate
- This plate has a NCDMV-determined two-letter designation as either a prefix or a suffix and, in addition, four customizable spaces.
- Spaces can be a combination of letters and numbers, or letters only, plates with numbers only will not be approved.
- Once you receive the application, specify two different personalization requests in case the first choice has already been selected.
- The annual cost for this plate is $60. A portion of your annual fee ($20) will support the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge.

Plate Design
The Friends of Jockey’s Ridge Specialty Plate design and two-letter designation shown may differ from the final product. Artwork is subject to change pending approval of NCDMV and other state entities. The plate will have an NCDMV-determined two-letter designation as either a prefix or a suffix.
Plate Fees
The Friends of Jockey’s Ridge State Park license plate annual premium ($30 or $60 depending on selected plate) will be added to the annual $38.75 North Carolina license plate renewal price. Of the premium, $20 will be forwarded to the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge, and $10 is for administration by the DMV. Fees are distributed annually by the DMV to the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge based on program participation.
Deposit Refunds
If the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge specialty plate program is not approved by the state legislature and NCDMV, deposits will be refunded to the applicant minus the processing fee.
Process Length
The initial process to obtain approval for a new specialty plate category is lengthy. The first round of plates are anticipated to be available during the summer of 2024. Updates will be provided on this site and via social media as details are available.
